Department Chairperson
In order to fulfill his/her professional responsibilities, the Department Chairperson shall:
- Work with the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, Director of Pupil Services and/or Director of Special Education to improve and coordinate curriculum in the area of responsibility through the use of high impact instructional strategies.
- Be an integral part of the Curriculum Review Process. Chairs are responsible for 10 hours of curriculum writing, development of planned courses, resource selections, curriculum review and/or evaluation. These 10 hours may be assigned during Summer Academy or as determined by the Director.
- Have an understanding of the subject matter, methodology of curricular goals and objectives of the assigned area as well as high impact instructional strategies.
- Act as departmental liaison with the principals and teachers.
- Assist in the planning of in-service and staff development activities.
- Coordinate the review and selection of textbooks and other instructional material.
- Assist in the research, implementation and evaluation of curriculum and intervention programs.
- Assist in the creation of assessments that demonstrate both student comprehension and application of the content as well as prepare them for high-stakes testing.
- Demonstrate the use of instructional methods that result in high achievement and growth for all students.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the state assessment process which includes eligible content, testing formats and procedures and current student achievement for the school/district.
Qualification(s):
- Applicants much hold a Level II certification in the appropriate subject matter.
Level Specific Responsibilities:
- Elementary Chairs shall:
- Attend monthly Department meetings as scheduled by the committee’s administrative representative.
- Secondary Chairs and Elementary Creative Arts Chairs shall:
- Attend monthly Department Chair meetings.
- Plan (or co-plan) and conduct regular joint department meetings for the purpose of improving curriculum and instruction by emphasizing high impact instructional strategies.
- Submit agendas, attendance, and minutes of monthly department meetings within five (5) days of the department meeting.
- Inform and share current literature and research findings with the teachers within the department.
- Work with principals to facilitate implementation of the instructional program.
- Assist with the preparation of the budget in the area of responsibility and submit to the principal.
- Coordinate book and/or resource inventory.
